Be inspired by the stunning work of the masters, then try out their loose, brilliant approach to design and color. It may well give you the confidence you are looking for in your own work.  Fun exercises abound each week.  Homework & critique encouraged; all levels and abilities welcome.  Honest.  You will feel right at home.

We will look at paintings by Vuillard, Bonnard, Sargent, Homer, Gauguin, Cezanne, Trevena.

Interested?  Reply to this post and please let me know which days you would like to join in.  As you know, my space is small. (my website scheduler is on the fritz). Each session is a stand-alone lesson so come when you can.

*March Classes
Looking ahead,
March classes will feature acrylics of all kinds from inks to heavy body acrylics.  Some weeks will explore collage and nonrepresentational fun!

If you haven’t tried this type of painting, you are missing out on lots of fun.  It should be called “play time.”  Are you looking for new, fresh ways to depict the beauty of landscapes and gardens?  Try these fresh and loosely rendered techniques that almost paint themselves!  Subscribe now!

A rather unusual supply list is below, or email Susan: LuchoLiz@gmail.com.

Supply List:

  • Leaves:  Freshly cut plants with printable veins, cut within 24 hours and flattened in a book. You may want to weigh down the book overnight. For best results, keep the plants flat in the book until we use them in class.  Ferns and grasses, trees and bushes with prominent veining on their back side work beautifully.  Also, interesting leaf shapes are lovely even without veining.
  • Masking or painter’s tape
  • Watercolor pencils (otional)
  • Rocks, flat glass marbles (floral arranging marbles), or weights for plants.  May be bought at most Dollar-type stores
  • A baggie of fresh grass from your yard
  • Watercolors
  • A pad of watercolor paper.  We will do multiple paintings.
  • Spray bottle or mist bottle of water
  • Bottle of diluted dish detergent or shampoo
  • White gouache (optional)
  • White acrylic paint or paint marker(s) (optional)
  • Paint cloths, rags or paper towels (I use terrycloth)

December Studio Classes: Set a Sketchbook Habit!

Susan Giannantonio’s Katy, TX Studio
Monday afternoons, December 7, 14 and 28, 2015
 1:00 to 3:30 pm., $30 per session
Why explore sketchbook methods and materials?

If you want to be a committed artist, it is important to keep your hand busy in your craft!  “Time in the saddle” is the only sure-fire way to improve your skills.
Whether you are planning to take a trip,  a museum jaunt or a week-long vacation, a sketchbook is a way to make a special connection with your experiences.  Equally importantly, it becomes a treasured memory trove where your journeys’ special moments are captured.
Truth is, on your day-to-day jaunts or even around your home and garden, a sketchbook “habit” is a simple way to make significant improvements in your drawing and sketching skills, a place to record artistic goals, to make thumbnails and painting plans, write notes from art lectures and demos.  The list goes on!
Join us Monday afternoons in December.  See and try examples of papers and mediums (pens, pencils, paints, etc.) that work best for sketching.  Look at some fascinating examples of how other artists have used sketchbooking to improve their artistic skills.
Make new habits to create lasting memories. Bring your ideas to share! All levels.

Afternoon Painting Classes in my Katy, TX Studio

Impressionism/Post Impressionism Classes are now being offered Mondays, continuously, throughout the winter and spring.  Class is held in Katy, TX Monday afternoons 2-5 p.m.
$30 per session.  Class size is extremely limited due to small studio size. Email lucholiz@gmail.com to check availability.  These classes fill quickly.

Let’s explore together some of the most beautiful paintings ever painted and try our hand at painting while using some of these masters’ techniques.  We will look at John Singer Sargent, Winslow Homer, Andre Derain, Pierre Bonnard and many others.  Using some of their ideas, we will take our own compositions beyond simply copying a photo reference and, instead, we will strive to create expressive and innovative works of art.  This is an  active and fun painting class to encourage experimentation with mediums and techniques.
Contact Susan for a suggested supply list.  You may work in your favorite mediums.
If you know others who might be interested in this class, please forward this email.
